Beliefs...

I have recently been reading Calvin and Hobbes to my daughters. Why couldn't Bill Watterson just come out with a book every now and then? Just write one strip a week and in a couple of years...

Sigh...

I want to restate my belief that Hobbes was real. And there is some circumstantial evidence, within the strips, to prove my belief - sort of like NDEs. I am a methodological naturalist - so I have an excuse.

Aaron, I will lose all respect for you if you agree with me.

I'm too drunk right now to comment. I have no idea what you're talking about. Either I am stupid or just naive. I have been trying all my life to figure out which. I'll get back to you when or if this makes sense.

Oh, and I'm an elitist.

BTW, Religulous the movie opens friday oct 3rd. I plan on attending, and asking every woman there, boyfriend or not, out on a date.

Yeah, that's what it takes.

Just your luck, I'll bet you find the one cultist in the entire theater.

Let me give you three answers.

1.) Hobbes is not real, of course.

2.) Hobbes is real, but not in the sense that close minded materialists think. Only an open minded minded spiritualist would understand.

3.) There is no such thing as truth, therefore Hobbes is real for me but not for someone else.

Bonus answer: "you cannot disprove the existence of Hobbes, so his reality is just as well established as that of Calvin's"

I'm a number 1.

Feh.

My beliefs are far more nuanced than that.

Hobbes is real but cannot be perceived by anyone over three and a half feet tall or 7 years old. All evidence, therefore, is subjective and is not accessible by the scientific method - since card-carrying scientists, by definition, are either over three and a half feet tall or over seven years old, the mystery of Hobbes must remain inscrutable.

P.S. I saw Hobbes when I was less than three and a half feet tall.

Indeed. Young-old = non-overlapping magisteria. Thus we will always be able to have faith in the existence of Hobbes. In fact, Hobbes makes me laugh, therefore I know he is real.

Okay, Aaron, so I'll bet you $20.00 that you actually WILL get a date with one of those women. Hey--it worked for you the last time I made a bet like this with you, remember? ;~) Besides, with the economy the way it is, I could really use the cash....

Lol! I can put Sophie's choice on my new ipod and carry it around town picking up women (was it Sophie's choice?)

I need to make more bets against myself.
